Wasteland is a science fiction open world role-playing video game. In 2087, generations after the devastation of a global nuclear war in 1998, a distant remnant force of the United States Army called the Desert Rangers is based in the Southwestern United States. A team of Desert Rangers is assigned to investigate a series of disturbances in nearby areas. Throughout the game, the rangers explore the remaining enclaves of human civilization, including a post-apocalyptic Las Vegas. (wikipedia.org)

The post-apocalyptic RPG that launched a thousand franchises (Fallout started out as a Wasteland clone). It probably wasn't the most advanced RPG of its day, but it was deep, engaging and playable enough that breezing through a playthrough was deeply satisfying; With the technological gap in mind, I certainly liked it better than 2020's Wasteland 3.

There's simple combat that's boring, and there's simple combat that's strangely engaging. Wasteland 1 falls into the second category. I think I would have preferred if Wasteland 2 had used the same system - much easier to deal with trash mobs that way. [Review is for the original DOS version, no remastering of any kind. Fun fact: this is the oldest game I've ever managed to finish.]
