Yume Nikki is a 32-Bit freeware game created by Kikiyama, a Japanese solo game designer. The game was made using RPGMaker 2003. The game is regarded as one of the most original applications of RPGMaker 2003, and the start of a possible new genre of games. "Yume Nikki" means "Dream Diary" in Japanese, and the game follows a young girl named Madotsuki as she dreams. The goal is to seek out and acquire all 24 'Effects'.

a shame. it seemed cool from the outside, but it's just too minimalist and scarce to provoke any emotional response from me.

I wasn't completely enamored by this game. Visually it's interesting and there's a lot of ways you can interpret it, but the overall theming and "plot" (if you can even call it that) is par for course for stories that have similar settings. Still, the game deserves props for delivering a unique experience and for how intriguing the overall aesthetic is. It's a game that has merit by art rather than by game design. Props for inspiring a lot of interesting games in its style, too.
