Suikoden (1995) - Rated 12 Apr 2025
"The overall gimmick is interesting - a realistically (by 90s fantasy JRPG standards) depicted military campaign where the status of both sides in terms of lands, armies, castles etc held and the ebb and flow of war is reasonably well considered and believable. HOWEVER… I didn’t much care for the clunky magic system, needlessly silent protagonist, simplistic dungeons, and the “collect 108 characters strewn across the world to see the real ending” thing (some of them missable!)… not for me at all."

"Sittin and rottin my brain cells away toggling lil squares"
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake (2024) - Rated 08 Feb 2025
"To my shame I never actually beat the NES original back in the day (that game is long as FUCK, bro, and hard!) but a literal lifetime later I've finally conquered Zoma & saved Alefgard n shit. And if you like JRPGs - yeah, the formula's all here. Recruit a party, towns, random battles, EXP, dungeons, learn spells, fight bosses, get your boat and flight device, all that. And I like that shit! They should have done a proper boss theme though even if the NES version just used the one battle tune."

Sonic X Shadow Generations (2024) - Rated 27 Jan 2025
"(Review for the Shadow Generations part only.) The Bowser's Fury-esque overworld didn't add much that the more simplified Sonic Generations overworld didn't already do fine but the levels themselves were fun and I enjoy Shadow's 2edgy4me attitude."
Sonic Generations (2011) - Rated 27 Jan 2025
"I'm not much of an expert on 3D Sonic but I enjoyed speeding and bouncing and rolling through the various levels; the game kept my interest and attention and had me jonesing to play some more when I was doing other things."
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (2024) - Rated 14 Nov 2024
"Zelda has been my go-to answer when asked about my favorite game franchise for a quarter century now, but I must admit I'm struggling with this one. It's super cool to have a Zelda overworld to explore and dungeons to puzzle through, etc - but man I just CAN'T wrap my mind and gaming instincts around having to summon these beds and crates for basic movement and pots and rocks to throw and/or other monsters to fight battles with. Every second I just wish I had a good old sword & shield in hand..."
Visions of Mana (2024) - Rated 26 Oct 2024
"I have mixed-ish leaning positive opinions. The battle system is pretty smooth and fluid and enjoyable, ably combining JRPG and hack n slash; the items/magic usage more akin to the former mixed well with chopping and weaving and dodging associated with the later. Nice light high fantasy look and atmosphere and world building too. On the other hand we have the usual 82 million unnecessary side quests, countless useless items/classes, and the ambiguous, unsatisfying ending is whack."
Castlevania Dominus Collection (2024) - Rated 11 Oct 2024
"Excellent Metroidvania package."
Quest for Infamy (2014) - Rated 06 Oct 2024
"Amused me well enough as a more take on Sierra / Quest for Glory formula."
