It really shows that the director of the other Souls games was absent for this one. Level design is less inspired, the world layout doesn't make sense, enemies are given unreasonably high amounts of health so that they're more tedious than they are difficult, they brought back farmable healing items, but also made it possible for enemies to permanently die. Overall a much sloppier presentation.

Dark Souls II demonstrates the importance of Miyazaki. His absence is felt from the opening lines to the credits. From a bird's eye view, this is like the two previous Souls games but once you actually play it you realize how off almost everything is. Linear level design, bland bosses, rehashed lore, gank-heavy enemy encounters, broken health systems, and a shocking lack of cohesion leaves Dark Souls II as the shakiest product from FromSoftware in a while and a low point for the Souls series.

It's fine, but learning to play it was a goddamn chore. Do people who love these games even have jobs? What are you doing in your life where this much wikia/youtube trawling is fun? Once I got the hang of it, this game was fun, but I feel like I should be pressing charges against From Software for wage theft.

Far more inventive than DS3. Makes up for its mechanical shortcomings.
