Dragon Warrior III is a top-down role-playing game where you travel around the overworld, caves, castles, cities and other locations while battling random encounters, buying equipment, and talking to people. You and your party members receive experience when they beat up monsters and level up with enough experience, increasing their stats. The game features a day/night cycle - as you travel, day slowly changes to night and vice versa; shops are typically closed at night.

Far more streamlined and accessible than you would ever expect from a NES game, and the gameplay loop was like the Skyrim of its time. I gasped when I discovered the game had fast travel. The pacing is good, not too grindy and never wastes your time waiting for the action

Maybe my favourite JRPG? Not sure why. Maybe just well-balanced??? Consistently fun and a bit grindy, but not so much I get bored. The Gameboy version, with some tasteful added content, is especially good.

The Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior series continues to enjoyably expand and dip back into its Dungeons & Dragons roots by bringing alternate characters classes: Soldier, fighter, pilgrim/cleric, wizard, merchant, jester and sage. This, in addition to the way it delves into the backstory of the Dragon world years before Phantom Menace made such a concept (un)cool make for an interesting and enjoyable experience.
