I wanted to get into this but the beginning is mind-numbing, uneven and straight up boring... so I didn't continue. Maybe it gets great, I don't know; there are certainly some interesting systems at place and it seems deep. It just takes too long to get anywhere and these days that really tests my patience. It's not an endearing quality for a game to take a while to get going (at all, obviously games can get better as they continue) and it never was. Hook the player quickly.

This one is popular among certain desperate Gothic fans, but it's not very good. The difficulty curve is rather nutty: you're totally useless for the first 10+ hours, forcing you to run past everything and only do peaceful quests for XP. Then you get the right stats and a ranged weapon and start mowing down the braindead enemies. The non-combat quests are the strongest part of the game; although the writing is quite dumb, it's not nearly as bad as in modern Bethesda games.
