Katamari Damacy

2004
Action
Puzzle
The game's plot concerns a diminutive prince on a mission to rebuild the stars, constellations, and Moon, which were accidentally destroyed by his father, the King of All Cosmos. This is achieved by rolling a magical, highly adhesive ball called a katamari around various locations, collecting increasingly larger objects, ranging from thumbtacks to people to mountains until the ball has grown great enough to become a star. 20 Years later, and this still feels like one of most unique and creative games I've ever played. From the colourful aesthetic and catchy soundtrack, to the simple-to-learn-hard-to-master core gameplay loop, to the absurdist comedy that both parodies Abrahamic religions and satirizes Japanese fatherhood, it really is a complete artistic package.

Great game on the Playstation 2. Bought it again through Steam and had to refund it, only playable with a controller.

A very unusual game and one of the happiest, jolliest atmospheres I've ever experienced in any piece of entertainment. The best kind of weird experience.

I was never fond of the minute-to-minute gameplay of any of the Katamari games but I can't deny that these games are some of the most fun, joy-filled experiences that have ever come out of Japan, or even the world, in terms of a video game. Damacy drips with atmosphere and it's jubilee is contagious.
