Mega Man ZX

2006
Action, Platformer
This game contains elements from the Mega Man X series and the Mega Man Zero series. The players are on a 2-dimensional overlay map with sprites where they engage enemies to finish their mission. When a player receives a Biometal, he is able to change form, gaining various abilities, such as the charge moves, or charging the player's weapon with an element of that Biometal. (wikipedia.org)

The limited lives system combined with the bad save point locations is a major flaw for me; it's hard to learn a boss or a jumping challenge when you get sent back multiple areas on every third death. Highly, highly frustrating. And I had to use save states for the final boss rush; at my skill level, that "rush" takes about an hour, without any opportunity to save in-game. Apparently the re-release adds a "checkpoint" system to make things easier, and I'd recommend using that.

The overemphasis on the lame plot is grating but underneath that is a damn solid title. Weirdly despite going Metroidvania, it mechanically feels pretty similar to the Zero games, which is a good thing. However, the level design is hit or miss - some levels have really fun challenges whereas other parts have bullshit with enemies flying into you offscreen. It doesn't help that the map system is absolute shit. On the other hand, biometals is a good mechanic and bosses are great, so worth playing.

Didn't really feel like a Mega Man game to me.
