I'm not exactly sure what went wrong here. This should have been a winning formula for me as an admirer of modern Persona games. I like the gameplay considerably less than Persona 5 Royal. That in itself would have been ok, however, if I didn't find the music so drab and repetitive and the story so uninspiring.

The gameplay of Metaphor is an interesting evolution of the Persona formula. I'd wager the fantasy setting was justified to recontextualize the series' time management premise into making side quests and travel be a part of the formula in a way that wouldn't be possible within a typical Persona game. Familiar enough gameplay for anyone familiar with the wider Megami Tensei franchise, but I didn't find the combat as enjoyable as Persona. I also struggled to get hugely invested in the world until quite late.

Strangled by a fog of "anxiety," the game posits fantasy as a method to investigate the Not-Yet. It rejects the "Bad New" of tyranny for a concrete utopia built on collective will. By framing a dream of equality against a nightmare of tribalism, it serves as an anticipatory illumination.
