No More Heroes is a game that I give a lot of praise for its stylish presentation and amusing plot beats but I tend to roll my eyes at is conceit when looked at deeper than that. I don't think the narrative is as cunning about the nature of gaming narratives as it likes to think it is, even if I think its satire of it is funny. Its gameplay isn't unbearable but it's also shallow and utterly tedious in parts, which I guess is "le point" but it's never been a point I held in much value.

More about the style and vibe and humor and music than any overwhelmingly memorable gameplay.

this game is kind of bad. it's also kind of good. it's kind of awesome, and kind of stupid. it is a wholly unique experience, which is a lazy way to review anything, but I am a lazy person. if anything, it's a somewhat astute look at fandom, identifying all of its destructive tendencies before the vortex of the internet amplified them. Travis Touchdown is one of gaming's great characters, even if the game he represents is bad. but also good. or is it?
