Octopath Traveler is an role-playing game that sports a graphical aesthetic, known as "HD-2D". Defined by the developers as combining 16-bit Super NES-style character sprites and textures with polygonal environments and high-definition effects. The different parts of the world determine their job or attribute. (wikipedia.org)

The combat is quite engaging but everything else feels, at best, perfunctory.

a disaster of a game, for the most part. "Choose Your Own Story" doesn't work as a premise when every story you can choose is terrible. combat is clunky, and with even battles against low-level enemies taking, like, five minutes. I expected the game to start to crescendo after getting all of the characters. instead, it becomes eight bad JRPGs rolled into one. the guy at GameStop who recommended this to me should be fired

Octopath Traveler is a JRPG in the purest sense: it will irritate as many gamers as it enraptures, and even within the percentile of players that enjoy it, it will probably vex them too far. This is the genre. There's something utterly addicting about it, and yet it still can't break into more streamlined gameplay mechanics in 2018. Octopath is great strategy in combat, but otherwise a slog. How much you love the combat will determine your score.

I gave it a shot because I was initially excited and wanted a Switch JRPG. Honestly I can't get past the gameplay loop of going from place to place, doing a dungeon, getting a character/advancing their story, rinse, repeat. It's just not what I want, which is a shame because the battle system is excellent, music and visuals are good. Character narratives are bland. I like their different skills and whatnot. Giving it a 45 because despite the positives I just don't want to play it anymore.
