Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom
Phantasy Star III mostly follows the traditional roleplaying game formula seen throughout the series, with exploration of several 2-D worlds, character recruitment, and random enemy encounters using a turn-based battle system. Unlike previous games, the series staple of "techniques" play a diminished role in combat. New features in the combat system include the auto-battle feature and the icon-based menu system. I liked it in concept, playing through multiple generations of characters was really cool. This is just...not as good as the rest. Less importance was placed on designing combat mechanics, but the need for combat never went away. You were left with not only a grind, but a boring one. It's still not terrible, but playing through it once is almost too much.
