Fascinating in its day but MAN has it (and other early 3D games, especially ones trying for "realistic" visuals) aged; going back to it today feels as archaic as going back to an Atari 2600 game.

Capcom boldly proclaimed Alone in the Dark clones would be a leading genre of the Playstation era, dubbing them "survival horror". They weren't wrong. The whole genre generally aimed for a cheesy B-grade horror/sci-fi esthetic at best, and the archetypal example is no exception. The controls, the acting, and the writing were always stiff and wooden, and the passage of time only makes that more obvious. It does deliver some atmospheric visuals and unintentionally amusing lines, though.

Probably the most quotable game in existence. "You were almost a Jill sandwich!"

I know the layout of this mansion better than my own house. Itchy. Tasty.

A solid start to the survival horror genre that is badly let down by some bad music and laughably bad voice-acting for the North American release (this makes it better in some ways). The gameplay is still pretty tedious because of how many times it asks you to backtrack but I will defend to the death the inclusion of the tank control scheme as it adds a lot in terms of tension that the later sequels lack.
