Undeniably an SRPG trailblazer, but by 21st century standards it has SO LITTLE to offer in the way of narrative.

I always felt that the SNES was the clear king of RPGs with its various great menu-based games, but the Genesis managed to do some fun different things with the strategy-based battlefields of the Shining Force series. It was pretty hard but addictive with a nice presentation. Also has a nice iPhone port that changes nothing from the original game.
