The Bard's Tale

The Bard's Tale

2004
Action

Loosely based on (or "inspired by", if you will) the classic Bard's Tale series that began as an Apple II RPG in 1985, this new installment brings a fresh dose of comedy to the genre with a 3D isometric view that runs on the Champions of Norrath engine. Is a dragon terrorizing the locals? The Bard will take care of it... for the right price. Local princess held captive? The Bard is your man... as long as she's hot. (ign.com)

... Did they not know what the Bard's Tale *was* when they made this? It's more like Leisure Suit Larry.

Genuinely hilarious writing coupled with astoundingly boring gameplay. The combat's depth is close to zero. Block, get parry ability, 3-click, win. The game has the tendency to throw a lot of trash mobs at you which makes backtracking and level traversing a chore, especially when the maps are large and barren while the game wastes your time by making healing take a long time and forcing you to wait for mana recharge. Probably worth watching the cutscenes on Youtube, but playing it is nauseating.

The big attraction is the comedic writing, which is fun. Sadly, it's coupled with precisely the sort of rote gameplay it wants to make fun of. For the time, it's passable (the summons are a nice idea), but repetitious and prone to things like AI getting stuck on corners. The main "strategy" boils down to A) Focusing enemy attention on a summoned minion, and B) Trying to find the attacks that keep interrupting enemy animations and stunning them so they don't interrupt yours and swarm you instead.
