Wario Land 4 is a 2001 platformer video game developed by Nintendo. Wario has to gather four treasures to unlock a pyramid and save Princess Shokora from the Golden Diva. It features 2D graphics with linear transformations. The gameplay of Wario Land 4 allows for some open-endedness as well as some order of difficulty. After an Entry Passage that serves as a tutorial for the game, there are four main passages: the Emerald, Topaz, Ruby, and Sapphire Passages. (Wikipedia.org)

Initially, I thought this was disappointing because it's much different from Wario Land 3, but I've grown to like this game quite a bit. The level design is really clever and puts a nice twist on the generic linear platformer. I don't think it utilized the transformations as cleverly as Wario Land 3 nor does it have its epic world building, but what it does have over its prequel is a different twist on the Wario Land formula requiring you to learn the level design like never before.

Arguably the pinnacle of R&D1's offbeat, experimental design philosophy, overflowing with charm and humour and teaching its quirks to the player with an impressive seamlessness. I don't think the game was a massive commercial success (although it's by far the strongest title in the GBA's early library), but Nintendo's first-party output in the past decade or so has clearly cribbed a lot from what made it work.
