A faithful yet kind of lackluster remake of the original Yakuza. Although the game is held back by the narrative and side content of a 20 year old game and can be quite jarring coming from 0, they do add to the narrative via flashback cutscenes which really help develop characters from 0, and to the gameplay with new mechanics while overall being pretty much a carbon copy of 0 engine-wise, which is not necessarily a bad thing considering the budget given. Missed potential but still decent.

This is really bad. They changed a few things in the game like you can save anywhere & now instead of paying cash to upgrade your abilities you have this skill meter that you get when you defeat enemies. They put stealth in this game, enemies & bosses that are really hard which isn't fun. You'll do a lot of these useless tasks like go here & pick up a ribbon or you need to meet so & so before you can pass point B. A lot of this not showing you where you're supposed to go. Terrible.

Coming from Yakuza 0, the story feels really jarring in this. I understand that it's from PS era, but that doesn't make it any better. The core gameplay is still fun, but the side quests aren't up to the modern Yakuza standards either.

Weakest link in the franchise apart from 3, but a must-play for anyone wishing to dedicate themselves to the franchise It at least has one of the best main villains of all of them.
