78 24% Jurassic World Evolution (2018) - Jun 01, 2021
"Purists will say this lacks significant depth for the simulation genre, and they're right, but I didn't need to this to wow me with thousands of branching customizable options. For the most part, this is an addictive theme park builder that excellently employs its license. Sunk a lot of time into this one."
89 54% Slay the Spire (2019) - Jun 01, 2021
"It's always nice when I find a game that I both can't stop playing and also can't stop telling to go fuck itself. Slay the Spire is deliciously deep and dangerously addictive."
89 54% Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019) - Jan 25, 2020
"This is a close-to-excellent Star Wars game. It feels like it's one sequel away from Respawn nailing it. Apart from some rough edges, which I can easily ignore, I think the combat system in this is unforgivable and unintuitive, smacking the hands of all players -- including those who focus and pay attention. Should it be overhauled for a sequel, I think Star Wars gaming may see a resurgence. And let me be clear: I want a sequel. This game understands why it's fun to inhabit this galaxy."
97 87% Into the Breach (2018) - Feb 27, 2019
"Into the Breach is deceptively crystal in its presentation and gameplay. Every possibility, option, and strategy is communicated to the player at all times, and failure to exercise the best method is always your own fault. The amount of abuse I allowed this game to inflict on me is lunacy, but I felt like I gained new knowledge and motivation with each failure, and if I started over then I could finally win. Probably the best game of the year."
95 77% Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2018) - Feb 27, 2019
"I don't know if I need to recalculate my score for Smash Wii U after this, because for all intents and purposes, Ultimate IS the better game. It's like the Mario Kart 8 of the franchise: refined to the point where improvement is impossible. The roster is madness, the single-player modes are grindy but better, and it doesn't feel like there's anywhere left to go. But I'm sort of okay with that. I'm ready for this franchise to retire. And maybe my score reflects that more than anything."
84 34% Super Mario Party (2018) - Nov 28, 2018
"Looks like Nintendo has stripped Mario Party down to its bones in order to re-launch it with a "Super" in its title. Subsequently, the game offers less content than I'd like, but the minigames are still creative and fun, often employing Switch tech without feeling overbearing like the Wii versions. This is a great icebreaker for any get-together."
90 58% Marvel's Spider-Man (2018) - Oct 16, 2018
"And is this enough? I keep asking that question. Lots of side quests and enough main story (for me, anyway) – so what’s the problem? Is it that I kind of did this already with ARKHAM CITY? I mean, the games both play very differently and very similarly, and I can’t stop drawing comparisons. 89 54% Octopath Traveler (2018) - Oct 16, 2018
"Octopath Traveler is a JRPG in the purest sense: it will irritate as many gamers as it enraptures, and even within the percentile of players that enjoy it, it will probably vex them too far. This is the genre. There's something utterly addicting about it, and yet it still can't break into more streamlined gameplay mechanics in 2018. Octopath is great strategy in combat, but otherwise a slog. How much you love the combat will determine your score."
62 9% Assassin's Creed: Revelations (2011) - Apr 22, 2018
"A fine hold-over for the inevitable sequel but this is where the franchise started to strive for my attention rather than deserve it outright."
51 5% Assassin's Creed III (2012) - Apr 22, 2018
"This is where I stopped caring about this franchise, and I really shouldn't have. Colonial America is such a fascinating time and seemed like such a good idea to inject this game with new blood. But it doesn't. The first hour of this game is a slog through tutorials and uninteresting plot development."
