94 0% Centipede (1981) - Rated 20 Aug 2023
"Early video games were both glitchier than we remember and more difficult, since you basically had to spent hours in intense eye-hand coordination while battling zombie enemies. Centipede upped the ante with a more complex board and more difficult levels, so you can end up spending days or weeks of your life without showering while you try to beat it. At least it no longer costs a quarter (probably $1.50 in today's money) to get slaughtered by pixels."
0% Depression Quest (2013) - Rated 20 Aug 2023
"You guys remember Hypercard? This is like a Hypercard stack from HR or maybe your high school, designed to soak you in propaganda under the guise of a game, but really it just was not that much fun. Nor was it really that exciting. Like all things symbolistic, you do it for the sake of feeling good about yourself, but you will never get those hours back."
90 0% Descent II (1996) - Rated 20 Aug 2023
"Given the graphics of the day, this game was a mind-blowing advance over the quasi-3D of "Doom," and launched a new type of virtual reality fascination. Neither particularly complex nor easy, it advanced the maze game to the point of becoming interesting, which made it less pointless than freespace games. It is easy to jump into and hard to get out of."
98 0% Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 (2000) - Rated 20 Aug 2023
"RTS games are iffy since they are one part tamagotchi, two parts board game, and one part combat simulation. "Red Alert 2" remains the gold standard because the game is calibrated to be realistic, if you accept the fact that your little guys are more likely divisions or battalions than individuals. Forget the missions, focus on single player, and focus on destroying the economy of your enemy. Needs an update for "modern" operating systems."
