I actually dig the mobility options in HoD since the dash is far more versatile than it is in other games. But fuck me is the level design grating. The boss fights are incredibly cookie cutter and one-dimensional, and for as cool as the movement options were the enemy and level design never really pushes you to use it. Also the game is both a visual eyesore and eye ache, among the worst Castlevania games in terms of presentation and style.

This is the only one of the six games that form the GBA/DS Castlevania trilogies that I've never beaten. I just found something about its aesthetics - both visual and aural - to be kind of grating and ugly. No huge problem with it on a gameplay level, but nothing that stands out about it either. Maybe the endgame/final boss is amazing and would have boosted my score, I don't know and may never.

one of the easiest games I've ever played. loaded it up in an emulator and bulldozed it in about three hours. that's not to say it's a problem, but man was it underwhelming in a series that's supposed to have at least, like, one tough boss fight in a game. it's downright amazing that Aria came out just a year after this and blew it completely out of the water.

If the prior entry dragged things out by making you take it slow, carefully hopping through tedious passages and grinding away for cards and XP, this tries the opposite technique of dragging things out with sheer walking distance as you breeze ever onward through one long, trivial hallway after another. At least they're much prettier hallways than last time, and there's a nice variety of overpowered magic attacks to play around with while you're at it.

Not as good as its predecessor, losing the difficulty and the complex magic system of Circle while ladling on even more backtracking. But the core gameplay is still good, and it's fun to zip around with the new dash mechanic. The graphics are also clearly improved.
