Chained Echoes

A worthwhile retro style JRPG experience - length and depth (of gameplay and story) on par with the likes of FF6 and Chrono Trigger, with even better graphics albeit not on their level musically. Lore of the world obviously had years of thought and development put into it. Mech mechanics at times felt like one gameplay gimmick too many.

A great JRPG that is probably not for casuals. On the plus side, it is deep and contains 40+ hours of high-quality and consistent gameplay. The combat is very good, though has a decent learning curve which will turn some folks off. On the downside, the story is a bit boring, the characters are dull, and the crystal system favors those who appreciate more than a bit of micromanagement. The Sky Armor thing feels a bit cliched and is an unnecessary addition to the game. B+

Pays tribute to SNES-era RPGs without plagiarising completely. The world-building and plot are good and there's some really interesting mechanics. Some things fall a bit flat though, such as anything involving the Sky Armours, and the quality of the writing at points. Nevertheless, it effectively being made by a single person is incredible.
