Wonderful atmosphere. The first playthrough is the only good one, but what a playthrough… it used to be such a unique game and spawned a hundred great games from the ideas it seeded.

I actually don't like this game as much as the sequel. I really am not a fan of the series in general, but its interface changed 2D PC RPGs for the better. We're still using their appropriation of the Microsoft Office ribbon to this day, and the genre would have died if not for this piece of crap. If PC RPGs had a Super Mario Brothers, it would be Diablo. I say that as someone who HATES Diablo clones, and only kinda likes Diablo 2.

A game that opened up its own fruitful sub-genre of action RPGs, though I don't know that the original really holds up as well as later examples. Certainly, I get the main hook: it's an endless, repetitive grind, but a fast-paced one where you're constantly leveling up and sifting through a mountain of loot to build the kind of character you want. But it wears thin for me pretty fast, especially compared to games with a bit more strategy than "spam your best move, guzzling potions as needed".

This game was one I desired so badly to play back in the late 90's, but never owned a copy myself. When I did get a chance to play it, I played the hell out of it. This series has spawned a genre of lookalikes, and for good reason.

I watched my friends older brother play this and I was entranced and wanted to play it but didn't have a computer that could run it. Eventually I got it on Playstation and beat the breaks off it. It was awesome.

A super-simplified yet fiendishly addictive take on dungeon crawling.

Never managed to get into this at all, it just feels too simplistic and awkward to control.

This game was fun at first, but the online play wasn't the best - with all the player killers.
