Dragon Ball Z: Budokai

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai

2002
Fighting
The Budokai series plays like a typical 3-D fighting game. As well as including the regular punch and kick buttons, there is the ability to shoot Ki blasts, which can also be used in specific special moves. Although these mechanics have stuck with the series, other ideas such as the "Hyper Mode" the ability to move at incredible speeds, fly freely, and "Beam Struggles" between two characters' beam attacks. were later replaced in favour of other techniques. not great, but the first game to at least capture the kinetic excitement of the show.

I played this because I like fighting games. OK game they get all the characters right like the t.v show.

Without the DBZ characters, this wouldn't be memorable in the slightest. Not bad, just completely unmemorable.

Budokai begins as pure wish fulfillment for fans and a high point in Dragon Ball videos games at the time. It is far from perfect, most of the characters have a particular move combination which breaks the match in your favor.
