I played this many years ago, and got about halfway through it, and came away with the impression that it felt like a prototype for the best game not yet made. it's been over 15 years and the legacy of this game is far-reaching, yet it hasn't translated into a true successor, one worthy of fulfilling the promise laid out here. we're probably going to have to keep waiting.

The story moves along at a nice clip, featuring different locales and playstyles throughout, which keeps the game feeling quite fresh. It's the game equivalent of a page-turner.

I got pretty deep into this game back when it came out, played through it several times using all the different magic color types. Its time-leaping mythology and dark atmosphere and giant bosses and spell system and sanity effects made for a great blend, one that feels a bit stiff and awkward to go back to after the horror game likes of Resident Evil 4 but stands out as very interesting in the GameCube library.
