The original Japanese version of Ninja Gaiden III. When the game was ported to North America, the game was made harder on purpose with the removal of the password feature and with a boost of damage inflicted by the enemies.

In many ways this is the pinnacle of Ninja Gaiden's stranglehold on the concoction of beautiful graphics, fantastic cutscenes and precision gameplay. And yet, it seems like this misses the passion and style that oozed from the previous installments. I can't really put my finger on it but there just doesn't seem to be any resonance here that I found in the earlier games.

I never got quite as into this one as the first two; I've actually never beaten it, perhaps because it intersected with a time when my interest was moving over to the SNES. But there's nothing wrong with it I suppose; for better or worse it's just more of the same Ninja Gaiden formula.
