Sunless Sea

Sunless Sea

2015
Adventure, Role-Playing
Based on the browser game, Fallen London. The player takes on the role of an Unterzee steamship captain, whose background and ambitions are customisable. The player can "win" by achieving their chosen ambition, such as becoming Fallen London's most celebrated explorer or amassing enough wealth to retire. Resources to achieve these ends are acquired by discovering new locations, trading goods across the Unterzee, battling ships and "zee monsters", and completing "storylet" quests.(Wikipedia).

beautifully relaxing victorian eldritch horror. i absolutely *love* the itemisation of intangible concepts - all those searing enigmas and zee stories and memories of distant shores. there is nowhere near enough randomisation to support the roguelite structure; dying and then redoing the same story snippets several times over is a chore.

An immersive journey through a complex world full of mysteries, intrigue and really interesting characters. The writing is marvelous! Failbetter games nailed the ambience instigating the player to delve deep into Sunless Sea's incredible stories.

Fine writing, but boy does the gameplay get boring.

Quite boring, it takes a long time to get anywhere and when you get there, the little interaction usually just involves reading something, then going to the next button to click, very little real interaction. You also die too often forcing you to re-do it all again.

I love what this game could have been based on concept. I hate so much of what this game actually is.

It's a ship management game with rpg elements. Similar to FTL in that you try to look after your crew and ship, but here it's on water. It's an alright game and worth playing for a while, but it becomes ridiculous to grind to take on stronger enemies and very slow to find items to progress in the game's many forgettable but sometimes decent mini-stories, as there is no main plot. The game is nicely atmospheric in the lovecraftian sense, and interesting and enjoyable enough to play for a while.
