incredibly ambitious freudian mecha-fantasy that can only be described as a resounding failure, a catastrophic success. characters refer to physical save points without any sense of postmodern irony. an antagonist has the name, i shit you not, "id". "your body doesn't just belong to you alone anymore" is a real piece of dialogue the male lead tells his female soulmate. the platforming is miserable, the cutscenes are awesome, and the entire second half is incomplete. this is definitely A Game.

One of the most unique and ambitious JRPGs of all time, but like Takahashi's other projects, it was more ambitious than what his budget allowed for. Still, the storytelling in this title is serene and intriguing, despite how over expository the writing could be at times or the dreadful presentation of disc 2. The combat is... lacking. The idea of a combo system is cool in theory, but ultimately the game gives you no reason to not use death blows which makes battles really tedious.

Something about the immediately post-Evangelion era gave the more overblown tendencies of Japanese sci-fi free rein to run wild with vague psycho-religious symbolism and shocking personal revelations on top of the usual obsession with apocalyptic themes, to often bewildering effect. It also set a sort of precedent for the barely interactive barrage of text that is this game's final disc—a monument to overreaching and over-budget ambition if there ever was one.

So when I played this when I was younger I was SO BORED, which I shouldn't have been because I loved JRPGs and big robots. Maybe if I went back I'd appreciate the story, which I hear is quite deep, but at the time I didn't. And I won't go back and play it now because there are other games to play.
