I'm not exactly sure what went wrong here. This should have been a winning formula for me as an admirer of modern Persona games. I like the gameplay considerably less than Persona 5 Royal. That in itself would have been ok, however, if I didn't find the music so drab and repetitive and the story so uninspiring.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II (2025) - Rated 18 Jan 2026
An utter mess of a game, with an enjoyable main story. The sheer amount of systems that govern its world is astounding, but you really need to be in love with the aesthetic to get the full dividend. If you're not a medieval-fanatic and willing to indulge in the tedium of simulated mundane activities, you will find yourself wanting to speed-run the story, to the detriment of your enjoyment. And by god, this has got to be the worst combat system of any game I've ever played.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach (2025) - Rated 12 Jul 2025
On one hand, I believe that DS2 can cure depression. Playing this gave me a lot of joy in a difficult time of my life, and I am grateful it exists. On the other hand, DS2 has the exact same problems with its writing as the first one. I was tempted to give this a full score until the ending sequences, which, withouth spoiling what actually happens, goes down the usual Kojima path of pure nonsense that requires outside help to understand. Almost GOTY, but alas. Game is addictive as hell, though.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (2025) - Rated 14 May 2025
I think I could keep adjusting my score on this one forever. The fact of the matter is that I think the criteria for a game to get full score is that I would be willing to replay it, and for all of the wonderful things it does right the thought of replaying Clair Obscur feels exhausting to me. If I'm willing to replay Death Stranding 2, which does not deserve full score, then neither does this game. But E33 is incredible, and I think it deserved GOTY. Well done.

Ghost of Tsushima (2020) - Rated 30 Sep 2024
Ghost of Tsushima gives good first impressions. It's genuinely the most visually striking open world game I have played. As someone who never bothers to engage with photo modes in games, even I have taken a few handfuls of nice screenshots. The story, however, is such a drag, and the main character is very one-dimensional. The open world does this game no favours, as each of its elements are copy-pasted and grow stale fast. Combat is fun, but not enough to save this game from mediocrity.

Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) - Rated 20 Feb 2024
I was going to be generous with my score for this one in spite of the game's shenanigans. I think making every single female cast member head over heels horny for Cloud made for a lot of completely patronising and awkward scenes. However, the strong world building, mostly excellent music (except one or two complete stinkers) and solid combat was a good time. Right up until the final 3-4 hours with some of the worst mission and boss design. Sorry, Remake. Lowered from great to good score.

I loved this game. If you do a deep dive analysis I think the story has MAJOR fucking issues that I'm not even sure any future Like a Dragon game can fix. I think it is long overdue for the writers to figure out that big political conspiracies and boring villains that love to talk about their plans do not do these games any favours. Give us some more PERSONAL stories. That being said, holy crap is this game FUN. Best gameplay of any Yakuza game to date. Took me 100+ hours to finish.

Pretty decent game, but the pervasive feeling of "when is it over?" never quite subsided after a little while, so I can't give it more than a marginal pass. The gameplay loop doesn't exactly thrill, and the otherwise well-composed score loops endlessly and randomly and feels less curated than it should. In-game text is RIFE with punctuation errors and comma splices. The narrative is otherwise well written, but my ending was unceremonious and sudden. It lacked impact. I'm not playing the DLC.
