92 86% | Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139... (2021) - Feb 14, 2023
"It's all about the story and characters here, which are great. The combat is OK but nothing special, and the constant backtracking gets old. It definitely feels "small" compared to the ultra-slick AAA titles out there, but that just adds to the feeling of intimacy in the game's world. The story has some great twists, and the soundtrack is amazing. Great stuff overall."

88 79% | Bloodborne (2015) - Jan 17, 2023
"I mean, I *guess* there's a story, but it barely factors into anything - you're here for the aesthetics and atmosphere. Run around, kill gross monsters, die a lot, grind for hours, die again, rage quit, repeat. Done and done."

82 56% | Assassin's Creed Rogue (2014) - Jan 13, 2023
"Playing as an Assassin-turned-Templar is different and kind of interesting, but the game as a whole is pretty average. Most memorable part was the first mate's strong Transatlantic accent."

"Simple but addictive in that early '80s way."

95 90% | Final Fantasy VII (1997) - Dec 09, 2022
"I could nitpick this game forever - the plot is too convoluted (still not sure I understand it all), the visuals have aged horribly, the tone is all over the place, the combat isn't anything special, and so on - but what can't be denied is just how MASSIVE this game was, both in scope and impact. It singlehandedly raised the bar on what games could be, both technically and emotionally (THAT SCENE traumatized a generation of gamers for life), and I have to respect it as the landmark it is."

"The Silver Sable high-five is worth my score all by itself."

78 39% | Minecraft (2011) - Dec 03, 2022
"I understand this game's appeal to certain groups (kids, autists, my retired father-in-law), but it has little to offer me."

"God tier. Heh."

"A phone app before phone apps were a thing. Everyone who had one of these eventually tried to kill it."
|
65 10% | Flappy Bird (2013) - Dec 01, 2022
"The pet rock of phone-based games - objectively terrible but fascinating in its massive fluke success. The story behind the game is more entertaining than the game itself."
