3 38% | Ghost of Tsushima (2020) - Rated 30 Sep 2024
"Ghost of Tsushima gives good first impressions. It's genuinely the most visually striking open world game I have played. As someone who never bothers to engage with photo modes in games, even I have taken a few handfuls of nice screenshots. The story, however, is such a drag, and the main character is very one-dimensional. The open world does this game no favours, as each of its elements are copy-pasted and grow stale fast. Combat is fun, but not enough to save this game from mediocrity."

4 68% | Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) - Rated 20 Feb 2024
"I was going to be generous with my score for this one in spite of the game's shenanigans. I think making every single female cast member head over heels horny for Cloud made for a lot of completely patronising and awkward scenes. However, the strong world building, mostly excellent music (except one or two complete stinkers) and solid combat was a good time. Right up until the final 3-4 hours with some of the worst mission and boss design. Sorry, Remake. Lowered from great to good score."

5 88% | Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (2024) - Rated 18 Feb 2024
"I loved this game. If you do a deep dive analysis I think the story has MAJOR fucking issues that I'm not even sure any future Like a Dragon game can fix. I think it is long overdue for the writers to figure out that big political conspiracies and boring villains that love to talk about their plans do not do these games any favours. Give us some more PERSONAL stories. That being said, holy crap is this game FUN. Best gameplay of any Yakuza game to date. Took me 100+ hours to finish."

3 38% | Citizen Sleeper (2022) - Rated 29 Dec 2023
"Pretty decent game, but the pervasive feeling of "when is it over?" never quite subsided after a little while, so I can't give it more than a marginal pass. The gameplay loop doesn't exactly thrill, and the otherwise well-composed score loops endlessly and randomly and feels less curated than it should. In-game text is RIFE with punctuation errors and comma splices. The narrative is otherwise well written, but my ending was unceremonious and sudden. It lacked impact. I'm not playing the DLC."

4 68% | Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (2006) - Rated 09 Dec 2023
"The Master Collection re-release didn't do this game any favours. I'm giving it a generous "good score" because of the great times I had with it as a kid, but holy moly did this age like milk."

4 68% | Alan Wake II (2023) - Rated 12 Nov 2023
"I recommend this game, but with some caveats. Alan Wake II could have easily been a 6/6, but a few key things hold it back. It really wears its inspirations on its sleeves, and it shows too much. The most obvious one is Twin Peaks, specifically season 3. It almost succeeds in establishings its very own identity, and it doesn't even have to, but the mediocre writing and hit and miss acting drags it down. Lastly, Alan Wake really isn't such an interesting character, and neither is Saga, honestly."

3 38% | Armored Core 6: Fires Of Rubicon (2023) - Rated 10 Sep 2023
"The game gets a marginal pass because it at the very least is perfectly playable. However, I cannot recommend this game to many people. Normal levels are laughably easy and uninteresting, while boss encounters feel about as bullshit as the hardest Elden Ring bosses. The game is a customiser's wet dream, but it's hard to justify NOT equipping your mech with the biggest explosives that kill everything in 30 seconds. And, the uncharacteristically overt story is embarassingly uninteresting."

2 13% | Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (2021) - Rated 13 Aug 2023
"Modern Ratchet and Clank is a shell of its former self. While the gameplay and graphics have continued to improve, the story and characters have succumbed to the whedonesque Marvel school of facetiousness. The PC version is marred by performance issues that don't reveal themselves until one third through. Gluttonous vram-consumption causes FPS-drops and stuttering when firing weapons, and the game's final mission is an uncomfortable experience for the same reasons."
