Beetle Adventure Racing

Though there are only six tracks, they are colossal tracks - the biggest and most detailed in any N64 racing game - that take several minutes per lap and are full of shortcuts, alternate routes, secrets, and easter eggs. The game is technically superb, with enormous draw distance, visual detail that belies the N64's limitations, high frame rate, and a rockin' sense of speed. It also has a funky 70s soundtrack.

What on the surface looks like trademark whoring is actually one of the finer racing games to be released, on any platform. I take that statement to my grave. To its credit, this never took itself seriously - from the old timey radio announcer to its explorative approach to each environment, always amped up to 11. Barreling through volcanos, tunneling inside pyramids, busting through UFOs, and being chased by a T-Rex are some of the highlights of my N64 years. So is Beetle Battle.
