Chess

A two-player strategy board game played on a checkered gameboard with 64 squares arranged in an 8×8 grid. Each player begins with 16 pieces, and each type of piece moves differently, with the most powerful being the queen and the least powerful the pawn. The objective is to checkmate the opponent's king by placing it under an inescapable threat of capture. To this end, a player's pieces are used to attack and capture the opponent's pieces, while supporting each other. (wiikipedia.org)

I always lose this game, but like a battered housewife, I keep coming back for more.

I'll never forget the one and only time I beat my uncle - Ohio chess champion - in a game. He got beet red and said it was because I was "unpredictable". Chaos theory, bitches.

I like Chess but I don't plan a single move ahead, a smart toddler could probably crush me at Chess.

There is so much going on here. A narrow pool with near infinite depth.

My main problem with this game is the way that it seems to be at its most enjoyable when both sides know very little about established strategies and are just winging it.

The perfect board game, although if one person is much better than the other it's very unforgiving.

Still the greatest board game ever as far as I'm concerned. Only a 9 instead of a 10 because it's only ever really at its most enjoyable when both players are at a very close skill level, but when you find that perfect chess partner I can play a dozen games a day without getting bored. Favorite chess thing: When you fork someone's king and queen and snatch up that queen, lol

Once I learned the 4 move checkmate I was unstoppable against everyone in the chess club. Yes, I was in the chess club, but for some odd reason, we were all mostly jocks with very few nerds. Canada really is Bizarro world.

It's a great game, but - unlike Go, a game I absolutely love - it almost always grows boring very fast for me. So though I can definitely see the appeal, I have to admit that I don't really enjoy playing it.

Good game, but I never really got into it. I much prefer Go.

Never got the hang of it, it seemed pretentious and stupid and made me feel stupid. Or maybe I am just stupid? Fuck this game.

Chess can be very interesting to think about, but to really engage with it, you need the kind of brain that finds diving deep into literally thousands of years of history, context, and strategy fascinating instead of intimidating, and I'm afraid I don't.

This will shoot up 8 tiers when I can finally beat my brother. Until then, I still own him at Pinochle.

After you learn the basics, it becomes a matter of learning off tons and tons of openings. A more strategic game is probably Go, except I was never able to learn that one. Or maybe one of the random variations of chess.

There's a reason this game has lasted for so long, there is a lot of depth in this very simple game.

There's not much to say about chess. It's a perfectly balanced board game and it's probably the most influential game of all time. Plus, this game has been played for well over a millennium, so it had to have done something right. If you like turn-based tactics games, you'll like chess.

Comparing Chess to video games... Well, in my experience, the harder you try to win, the less fun the game is. Playing against an amateur can be enjoyable and quick paced. Playing against someone as skilled as you are... well, it gets boring quick.
