Set in a dark fantasy world, players take control of a hero who has journeyed to the fictional kingdom of Boletaria, which is being ravaged by a cursed fog that brings forth demons who feast on the souls of mortals. A solid first attempt that laid the groundwork for a much better game. You can see the skill of the studio in question on full display here. My biggest complaint is that this seems to be difficult for the sake of being difficult as it massively punishes players for death. The individual levels are also not quite as fully realized as they could be.

Before Souls really took off, I remember playing this and thinking, "God damn this game is hard, what do I do? Why do I suck at games?" But nah, turns out this was just their thing. I think I enjoyed it quite a bit because it was fresh, and I'm not even a Souls fan.

Genious idea and perfectly materialized, if this game had Gwyn it would be my favorite Souls game.

If any game could use a remaster it's this one. In a lot of ways it's just as good as the rest of the Soulsbourne franchise but the consistent improvements from the sequels really make this one hard to go back to. If you are interested in the series I would suggest playing this one first and trying to play another one if this feels dated. Order doesn't matter too much after that.

Very nice world to explore, but the game play and level design can be pretty tedious sometimes. I think Dark Souls was a big improvement, but I'm glad I saw where it started.

I played Demon's Souls after Dark Souls and was surprised to find that I enjoyed this game more. The bosses are wonderfully varied and interesting, the level design is mostly very elegant (5-2, I hate you), and there are some beautifully atmospheric moments.
