Doom: The Dark Ages

Delighted to announce I did not watch a single FMV. The sheer amount of generic backstory is utterly at odds with the opening cutscene of the 2016 reboot. DOOM does not need any more exposition than "demon bad, shoot lots." I wonder how much these incredibly long videos cost to produce and much more gameplay we could have had instead. Or maybe even saved a few dev jobs. Plays fine though; had fun.

A slightly slower, more methodical entry, that refreshes the aesthetic of the modern series and tweaks mechanics enough to be distinct. I found myself more interested in exploration to uncover all the secrets than with the previous games. Features a bit more narrative this time round, which is nothing special but inoffensive enough.

For reference: not a boomer shooter fan, liked Eternal, really liked 2016 (though I want to revisit now). I love this. I love the shield and how dynamic and cool it makes the fights. Every weapon is useful though I had a few I went back to the most. I like the heaviness and how it puts less emphasis on mobility than Eternal did, but he still moves fast. When he drops from a height, damn that feels good. And I liked the story/lore, which is surprising.
