A turn-based tactical Western RPG in which the Chosen One is tasked with exploring post-nuclear California to locate and retrieve the fabled Garden of Eden Creation Kit for their famine-stricken tribe, while coming into contact through branching dialogue trees with numerous tribes, factions and micro-civilizations, each with their own virtues, vices, socioeconomic situations and political agendas.

Not my kind of game system. While the world and the story are of course great, I was surprised at how basic and often flippant or goofy a lot of the dialogue was.

Great game. Stuck at the end, character not strong enough for the final area.

Gets knocked a bit for just being a refinement of the original but the new setting, story, and rework of many of the underlying RPG systems makes Fallout 2 stand out all the more. While I still enjoy the time-limit aspect of the original, its removal lets the quality of the side content shine in a way the original did not.

Not much different in approach than the first installment, really, and thus excellent for the same reasons. It did embrace the sillier aspects of the setting a tad more as it expanded on things, though absurdity is definitely in keeping with the overall tone and message of the setting anyway.

Many of the old-school Fallout fans will tell you that Fallout 1 is the best game of the series, but I prefer the sequel. It trades away some of the seriousness of its predecessor in exchange for more content, more skill checks, more art assets, better exploration, and several faction-based questlines. Really a great game.

Took the great things from the first and got rid of some of the shit. It's not perfect but its a pretty fun ride.

Removes the terrible time limit imposed on the first one but has the most boring opening of fighting scorpions in a cave imaginable

Clunky interface makes going back to it hard, but I'll always have fond memories of what I consider one of the best atmospheres a video game has ever conveyed. The worldbuilding has an electricity to it that has modern, lesser installments still frantically crib from in an attempt to recapture that magic.
