Okami

2006
Action, Adventure
Set sometime in classical Japanese history, Ōkami combines several Japanese mythology and folklore to tell the story of how the land was saved from darkness by the Shinto sun goddess named Amaterasu, who took the form of a white wolf with celestial markings covering its fur. It features a distinct sumi-e-inspired cel-shaded visual style and the Celestial Brush, a gesture-system used to perform miracles.

A decent if perhaps overrated Zelda clone. It's much more combat focused than Zelda and the puzzles are either insanely aggravating or brain-dead simple. The combat itself is often way too easy - I don't think I've ever died in this game and the game gives you so many power-ups you end up being unstoppable. Still, the game has a really interesting aesthetic, a lot of cool power-ups, and some neat dungeon designs here and there. The game feels like it goes on forever, but it kept my interest.

Highly recommend playing on the Switch, touch-screen controls are absolutely the best way to play Okami. I enjoyed the world, aesthetic and story, although the third act felt rushed and incomplete. There's a level of charm, artistry and creativity that still makes the game stand out so many years later.

The game's art style is unique and beautiful. Some brush mechanic are interesting, rest are generic. I like the idea of purifying the curse through God power and healing nature. The dialogue can get silly fun but it's few and between. Most are long n boring or filler dialogue. Any story related to kamiki village is good. A lot of go here and there fetch quest. Camera's slow to move. Mini game suck. Boss fights and gameplay is meh. Overall, can't play for long or else it becomes a grind.

Most overrated game in history, but decent. WAY too much text to scroll through, the default camera is garbage, and the fighting is tedious. But not bad since it sticks close to the Zelda formula.

Didn't do much for me. The intro is stupidly long and the combat fairly unexciting. Never got far enough to really explore any of the dungeons, though I did do the first tutorial one which had a puzzle that I had to google to solve. Also, the PC version is locked at 30 fps due to animations being tied to framerate. Playing anything other than Undertale at 30 fps on PC is sacrilege.

An aesthetically lovely take on what essentially boils down to Zelda formula.

How do I love this game? Let me count the ways. One PS2 edition, one PS3 edition, one PS4 edition. Yeah, this game is so great I've bought it three times already. The artwork, the music and the intricate and weird plot have never aged. Okay, strictly speaking, maybe I should knock a few point off, on account of the stupid jump puzzles, but this is my review and this game deserves it all for making me bawl my eyes out, dammit!
