Paper Mario

Paper Mario

2000
Role-Playing
Mario can jump and use his hammer to overcome physical obstacles placed in the game's overworld. Many of the game's puzzles and boundaries are based upon the abilities of Mario's partners, who each have a specialized skill required for progression in the game. The player accumulates partners as they advance into different locations; only one partner can accompany Mario in the overworld, although the player can interchange them at any time.

rough around the edges (har har) and weaker than both its inspiration and sequel, but the Mario RPGs have a better understanding of what makes RPGs fun than the Final Fantasies and Dragon Quests of the world.

This is one of the best RPG's ever made.

Those that suggest the great but overall muddled sequel is better are misguided. This game is a masterpiece. Every level is stupendous. Every partner adds dimensions to the games and the combat. Every boss battle is memorable. The music is some of Nintendo's best -- ever. This is probably my favorite N64 game.

Ultimately just the proof of concept that would blossom in its brilliant GameCube sequel.

Visuals are a bit lacking and the pacing is off some times, but a spectacular game nonetheless. If only we got more than two games as a pretty good spinoff...

It's not quite as good as Mario RPG but it shows occasional flashes of a much better game than that. It's humor is still pretty solid and it works better than it should, all things considered.
