Resident Evil 2

1998
Horror, Survival
Ready or not, the terror of Resident Evil 2 is here. In chapter one, the case of the disastrous T-virus outbreak--a mutagenic toxin designed for biological weapons--was eventually closed but the experiments were far from over. Control the destiny of Leon Kennedy or Claire Redfield as their nightmare begins when a biotech terror runs rampant in Raccoon City. Relentless zombies and hideous monsters are all out for a taste of your blood. If the suspense doesn't kill you, something else will.

Like this game. I think it's the better Resident Evil games than the first 3 on this system.

Technically it is a much better game than the original. The voice acting and music is much better and the level design is much better. However, it loses some in terms of creativity by being almost exactly the same setup. The gimmick with the two characters is interesting but doesn't amount to all that much. It's still worth playing but it is a lot less impressive the second time around even when it amounts to a better game.

More interesting environments featuring memorable backdrops and set-pieces make for an OK followup to the first game. The core gameplay remains the same mix of awkward action and silly "find the key" puzzles.

The control mechanics still leave a lot to be desired in this horror sequel. It still brings a lot of atmosphere and a halfway decent story to the table. As well as building the world established in the original to better effect.

The epitome of Resident Evil.

I actually prefer the prequel more since this game makes enemies a lot weaker and is more generous with resources. The level design is also a lot more linear making layout knowledge far less important and interesting, especially since the first game made some neat set pieces surrounding that. Despite that, this game is still solid. The setpieces and boss fights are still cool and the extra routes give a new life and replayability to the core game in a way that's beneficial.

As an adult, I'd probably appreciate this franchise's emphasis on atmosphere over gameplay, but as a kid I just found this too plodding.

Put your retarded puzzle mansion into a police station, slap in a mutant crocodile and a big leather coat man and you got a masterpiece on your hands

I've never found much fun in the awkward controlling of characters slowly moving through small static 2D locations. Most overrated PSX game.
