A text adventure loosely based on a couple entries from the Douglas Adams books, Arthur Dent wakes up to find his home about to be destroyed, both in the local and the galactic sense. The game is available for free (with some graphics) on the BBC website.

This rating isn't because this is a bad game, because it's not; it's well-made and well-written, full of humor and thoughtful satire. And it's not because I don't think it should exist, because it absolutely should, there are so many people who have gotten a lot out of it. No, this is a completely personal, subjective, and unfair rating, because oh my god the deepest fibers of my being hate the idea of games that become unwinnable, and becoming unwinnable is this game's central mechanic.

Beating this thing while only using one "Invisiclue" is my greatest personal achievement in video gaming. Also, this is the best non-book incarnation of this story (probably because Adams helped write it).

[apple II] Basically unplayable if you haven't read it, I hadn't at the time, I was all Spectrum by then.
