The Hobbit is primarily a platform game, with elements of hack and slash combat and some rudimentary puzzles, played from a third-person perspective (the Game Boy Advance version is played from an isometric three-quarter top-down view). The player controls Bilbo Baggins throughout the game, the majority of which is built around basic platforming; Bilbo can jump, climb ropes and ladders, hang onto ledges, swing on vines etc. Progression through the game is built around "Quests." Actually pretty decent for an obvious low budget effort. It respects its source material more than most licensed games do (especially those based on Tolkien's works) and even contains references and easter eggs that fans of the book will love. The gameplay is solid if nothing special. If nothing else it does far more justice to the book than Peter Jackson's movie trilogy, which probably isn't saying much.

The problem is that it badly overstays its welcome by the time its only halfway done.

The Hobbit's difficulty curve is probably a bit to high considering the audience it seems to be going for. That being said, the world is nice to look at and traversing the chapters of the venerable novel is a thrill.
