A damn solid game in every respect, even the plot is oddly endearing. It's telling that this game alone would spark the indie industry that came after it, spawning many games that tried (and often times fail) to capture its inspiration. Sometimes the game pulls some dumb shit by making up secret or alternate routes that you couldn't possibly have discovered intentionally, forcing you to look up a guide for it. Despite this it's still one of the best indie games on the market.

An impressively good game. The art and the writing are very endearing, the weapons are varied and well designed, and I appreciated the relatively high difficulty. (Although I still haven't beaten the secret final level.)

One of the first games that really propelled the idea of the Metroidvania to this thing everyone was aware of. The world is not interconnected in a way nearly as brilliant as Super Metroid, but that doesn't mean it's not a ton of fun for it's fairly brisk runtime. Played through it in about two sittings I think.

I'll admit, it's story-telling is a lot more complex than most other 2D-platformers, including modern indies, but I had difficulty staying interested and engaged with the game and story, and ended up abandoning it half-way through. Might try playing it again some time in the future.

a gem. the grandfather of all indie games and one that still holds up delightfully well to this day.
