Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

2004
Action, Role-Playing
Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories is set immediately after the events of the first game. It is set in Castle Oblivion, a mysterious castle kept by Lord Marluxia. Sora and his teammates are told that the castle causes visitors to lose their memories upon entering. The lobby and areas between floors are white with flower-themed decorations, but each floor can be transformed into a different world from the first Kingdom Hearts game using "world cards" created from Sora's memories. A neat idea on paper, but the card system ruined it for me. It limited your options in combat and made it more of a slog than strategic or fast-paced. Most of the levels were just retreads of the first game, but made much more boring in design. The plot is as non-sensical as KH usually is, but so little happens in this game that it's fairly skippable within the KH timeline. All you need is a slight synopsis and you can give this game a pass.

For some reason I loved this game as a kid yet find it incredibly hard to get into now. The story is typical Kingdom Hearts tripe, incredibly dumb yet incredibly pretentious, but the gameplay got really experimental. Unfortunately it ended up being broken and tedious as hell, seeing how enemies could constantly break your attacks, and even if you've been managing your deck properly you'd still struggle just to progress forward.

If we're talking about the Handheld GBA Game then you are in for a fun ride that doesnt overstay it's welcome and delivers fun action with a unique card battle system that honestly get's more hate then it deserves. the PS2 version is the same experience just on a grander scale which could add more lengthy play times and even harder combat scenarios. as a bridge from 1 game to the next you can't go wrong with either one. but the GBA version is a quicker experience

I honestly wanted to like this game, but the game mechanic of using the cards in battle just made it unbearable to play.

Sometimes an innovative system doesn't enhance the game and instead weighs it down. Chain of Memories is one such.
