When I was a kid, and worked at Boy Scout camp in the summers, we played the shit out of casual Magic. Emperor games, 3 or 4 man free-for-alls... A whole lot of fun. The few tourneys I've been to were full of shit bag losers, but I have a group of solid friends that a few times a year will drop $100 or so on boosters and we'll do a draft tourney on a Saturday with lots of beer and nachos and shit, so that's fun. The various video game incarnations are all at least fun for a few hours.

I haven't played this in years - or should I say I haven't played with cards that aren't years old - so I don't know what's recent, but this has been a lot of fun over the years. My biggest beefs are natural consequences of a collectible card game: namely, card escalation and the goal of sucking as much money from you as possible.

I get the appeal of living card games but Magic has to be one of the most expensive and unreliable versions of a generally expensive hobby. If you want in on the one with the most players and will probably never die, this is your game. If you want a co-op lcg, try Lord of the Rings or Arkham Horror. If you want a better (imo) competitive lcg, try Game of Thrones 2nd Edition or Legend of the 5 Rings. And with those you buy expansions with every new card instead of horrid random booster packs.
