Mario Party

1998
Party
Mario Party takes the form of a traditional board game, with players taking turns to roll (hit) the dice block and move ahead the number of spaces shown ranging from one to ten. There are many different types of spaces players can land on, each producing a different effect. The primary objective of the game is to collect more stars than any other player. (wikipedia.org)

I'm looking at my horribly scarred palm. No I wasn't crucified I ripped my hand open on a N64 analog stick rotating it like a madman to wind up a Shy Guy doll FOR NO REASON.

Be prepared to shred all of the skin off your palms. The games are fun, but the board itself sucks. As a kid, I always remembered wishing the game was over about 20 minutes before it was.

My sister let one of her friends borrow my copy of this. I never got it back. Still bitter about it.

This is a flawed gem in need of some polish. The board game minigame formula is there, but some games were so lopsided and poorly executed. Later ones would be better, I'd argue 4 is about its height.

Mario Party is a great formula but this game was a rough start. For one the game has a lot of map gimmicks that are poorly thought out - Pirahna plants on Peach's Cake are a worthless investment and Magma Mountain's design of leaving you broke makes the game tedious. It has some great mini-games that'd be used in future titles, but too many require stick spinning, a lot of the games are unbalanced and the single player games are mostly awful.

Still the most successful adaptation of classic board games into the virtual medium. Mario characters being your tokens were the cherries on this cake. I could go on about the game's simple design being sneakily deep and the plethora of minigames the franchise has since wrought, but instead I'll just lament over what these games have turned in to. Nobody wants to share a car, Nintendo.

I know that this game takes almost no skill, but fuck, I could seriously play this for hours with a group of people. It's stupidly fun. I only wish you could fast forward through the drivel portions.

When they introduced this series I was amazed. Again another unique type game that has all these mini games in it to play vs your friends. This one actually had you go into the minus stats which later on in these the lowest you can go was 0.

This is fun if you have four friends as the games make things interesting. Not necessary fun or fair but interesting.

Mario Party is a fun game. No mistake. With a group it has the potential to be a great experience. HOWEVER! This is entirely predicated on how the particular round goes. Because Mario Party also has the potential to destroy your hands from too much spinning, destroy your friendships from too much betrayal and bad luck, and be an overall fighty and negative Monopoly-like experience. So take it or leave it.
