Fun, and overflowing with charm. Can be a little on the frustrating side at times though, which is perhaps appropriate considering the games its paying homage too, and its inventory system could be much better designed.

The levels are too long. I hate instant death pits as a punishment and it's the main design of levels. Treasures after you fall to death pits are usually not even retrievable. Boss fights are easy compared to death pits. The dark levels are the worst. Stopped playing, got fed up with the instant death pits. Long levels + instant death pits = zero fun.

So unbalanced. I would say it's an improvement over the NES classics, but it still borrows way too much from them. Knock back is a terrible mechanic and should never be used in any video game. I got the armour upgrade to reduce knock back but then they put in this bullshit auto-move instead. The amount of times I fell off platforms because of that stupid bullshit. The checkpoint system is also dumb, in a game like this you should just respawn at the start of the screen... (cont'd in the forum)

Absolutely the best neo-retro platformer to date, a perfect blend of the look and feel and level design of Mega Man, the pogo stick action of Duck Tales, the world map of Mario Bros 3 and the towns of Zelda II. Spot on play control and level design with intense badass boss battles, gorgeous pixel art visuals and catchy chiptune music that even manages to sneak a charming & moving story into the mix. Massively fun and playable.

Easily my favorite game of this decade. Yacht Club Games has created an amazing adventure platformer that caters to the nostalgia of early console players, but keeps everything new and fresh to bring in a younger audience. Everything that is loved from classic titles such as Megaman X, Castlevania, and Duck Tales seems like it was studied for this game to be the ultimate side scrolling game.
