Star Fox 64

1997
Action, Shooter
The update to the 16-bit Super NES title continues the original's on-rails 3D shooting action on the Nintendo 64. Starring Fox McCloud, Peppy Hare, Falco Lombardi, and Slippy Toad, this new 64-bit version contains 15 plus levels, easy, medium, and difficult paths, forward-scrolling levels as well as full 3D realms, and a three-part multiplayer mode using a four-player split screen. In addition to plenty of Arwing action, the game introduces a new hover tank and even features a submarine level. The 8-megabyte cartridge also boasts voice samples from 23 different characters instead of the original's animal noises. Star Fox 64 was the first game to feature Rumble Pak support. A Rumble Pak bundle and standalone version of the game were sold. Released in Europe under the name Lylat Wars.

Awesome game. You can even play couch coop 4 split screen. However the single player game in this is awesome. As it was 1 of the first titles on the N64 that used the rumble pak and the characters actually talked.

This game did a ton with branching stories, level design, and sound as well. It is incredibly dated though, as all games on the N64 are.

I could never pinpoint what made this game so great. Everything felt so fluid and tight. It's like a gorgeous tech demo of a flight sim, but with lasers and monkeys and epic music and satisfying sound design! The campaign never took too long, so flying around never got stale, and because there were so many multiple paths to play through, the game's replayability was through the roof. Maybe I just pinpointed it.

The best of the Star Fox franchise. The campaign was fun, but the multiplayer, from what I remember of it, was fantastic.

"Do a barrel roll!" "If I go down I'm taking you with me!" "Hey Einstein, I'm on YOUR side!" "Sorry to jet, but I'm in a hurry!" "Only I have the brains to rule Lylat!" More quotable lines than any other game ever! And it's a ton of fun to boot. Certainly the highlight of the Star Fox series by some margin.

Controls really well and has a lot of satisfying crunch to everything you do. I also love the replayability and how many different routes you could take in the game, which makes its short length more acceptable. I kinda wish it adopted the strategy elements from Star Fox 2 when jumping to 3D, but alas we can't have everything.

Do a barrel roll right into the garbage. Ugly, ugly game. I don't like flight/space shooters so I take it out on all of them like some racist with a redemptive story arch. (I'll probably like one eventually)
