Super Mario World

Jumping on a goomba and they don't squish like in the previous games but flip over and can be picked up. We're in the big leagues now.

Considering it is now more than 30 years old, 'Super Mario World' feels amazingly modern, and few, if any, of its design elements would seem out of place in a recent platformer; everything about its controls, art, tone, music, etc. exudes mature craftsmanship and precise tuning, and cleverly contributes to guiding the players along a predetermined path while instilling in them a sense of discovery, invention and achievement.

Right out out of the gate at the SNES launch, Nintendo put out yet another title that showed that as far as platformers were concerned, no one else would be challenging their combination of scale, variety, polish, and intricate design for some time to come.

One of my favourite Mario games.

Played through this for the first time in 2021 and it still feels so fresh

The 2D Marios are games I appreciate more than actively enjoy, but there's so much great stuff in here.

A big game for a big cons... WAIT, THIS CAME OUT ON THE SNES. (Its a good one)

This may be the game I played the most in my childhood, and coming back to it as an adult, it feels viscerally good to play. It's colorful, controls well, has neat powerups, interesting challenges, a nice-sized world with not-too-much depth, extra challenge levels, funny moments, spooky moments, WTF moments... If someone had never played a platformer and asked me which one they should start with, I would say this. It not only teaches you how to play it, it teaches you why you would want to.
