In my estimation, as somebody who has beaten the game, the most difficult part of this game is the learning to understand the long term strategy of the town aspect of the game. Sure permadeath sucks. Sure some of the missions, especially while learning, are super tough, but a bad mission will not lose your campaign. Only misjudging town long term strategy or many mission failures in a row will do that. This is off putting to many people. I fucking love it. Plus the narration is perfection.

for all its loving craft, this gets very tiring very quickly. amazing narration though. "inordinate exsanguination" is a turn of phrase indeed.

Fun gameplay with a great sense of style, but beating the game requires some inordinate grinding. The combat also relies heavily on the surprise factor of RNG, which makes it much less tactical than it could be.

It's fun for a while, but it's one of the grindiest games in existence. That's a ridiculous feat to have. It's quite addicting, but also overly-complex and sometimes annoying. It takes way too much time to configure heroes. It has nice atmosphere/setting and creature design, and the stats and equipment are interesting, but the game doesn't have depth in it's story or dialogue, it's more about the atmosphere, creature designs and resource management. The grinding is what kills the game though.

It is certainly very stylish and I do appreciate all the work in creating this dreadful and oppressive world. Unfortunately, its biggest strength also leads to its biggest flaw: the overreliance on luck. Luckily you can circumvent it somewhat if you have a long-term strategy.

I think I'm too dumb for this game. I have no idea what I'm doing, the interface and controls are so confusing on PS4. I have to imagine it feels nicer to control on PC. Maybe I'll give this another try one day when I'm less stupid.
