Absolutely exploding with charm from every pixelated pore. There's so much goofy, giddily exuberant humor here, even dipping into wry self-deprecation at many points, a new thing for Nintendo at the time. The action button mechanics spice up menu-based RPG battling and it's all very aesthetically charming if very simple on a gameplay level.

Solidly takes the Mario formula and converts it to RPG elements for a pretty fun, if occasionally clunky ride. Also fun to have Bowser in your party.

a fun but uneven diversion. story makes little sense. battles become incredibly repetitive. characters and charming script are memorable and are what make it worth playing.

I really think the RPG elements are strained by a company that should have known better (Square). Fortunately, everything else in this game is absolutely fabulous: the characters, the humor, the story, in fact, just the writing in general is some of Nintendo's best work.

The story is what makes this game work, the mechanics aren't much fun tbh. Really really well done. Play it.

Introduces a fun twist on other contemporary Square RPGs in giving the combat timing-based attack bonuses, and other active prompts to improve results. What really shone for me was the great variety in all the one-off minigames. A lot of the gameplay feels at times like a proto-Mario Party in that way. Plus some creative boss fights and great music.
