Assassin's Creed III
Assassin's Creed III
2012
Action, Adventure
The plot is set in a fictional history of real world events and follows the centuries-old struggle between the Assassins, who fight for peace with free will, and the Templars, who desire peace through control. The story is set in the 18th century, before, during and after the American Revolution from 1754 to 1783, and follows Desmond's half-English, half-Mohawk ancestor, known as Connor, as he fights the Templars' attempts to gain control in the colonies. The struggle of Assassin’s Creed III stirs reflection upon man’s bondage: cities that suffocate, empires that deceive, and the redemptive purity of wilderness. Its gameplay grants fleeting glimpses of liberty, yet binds the player in needless complexity. Thus, the promise of freedom remains noble, though imperfectly realized. - Full Review

AC 2 was mainly made by French Canadians. After it was a hit, the company forcefully ejected the main game designer and announced the next game would be about the US War of Independence. I laughed for five minutes when I read that. After climbing around big cities in Renaissance Italy, did they really think it would be funner to jump around colonial villages?

Very slow and boring start. But once you get to play as Ratonhnhaké:ton the story picks up and the game becomes a lot more fun. It was cool to roam around the frontier and climb in trees. The soundtrack is awesome and the Connor storyline was really cool. The modern day storyline ends on a whimper and is definitely a big disappointment after being excellently set up in AC II.

A very low point for a franchise that has more misses than hits. Nothing about this game feels like it even saw a second thought. There are countless mechanics which never factor into the gameplay. The story starts off as interesting, until all that is replaced by more generic assassin crap. Just nothing about this game works.

This is where I stopped caring about this franchise, and I really shouldn't have. Colonial America is such a fascinating time and seemed like such a good idea to inject this game with new blood. But it doesn't. The first hour of this game is a slog through tutorials and uninteresting plot development.

After the three great titles about Ezio, this (at the time, presumably) final chapter felt extremely underwhelming, rushed and filled with frustrating missions, poorly presented narrative and a general lack of excitement But as always in this series though, the world building is impeccable, even if colonial America isn't as intersting as previous settings (for me at least), and they did add the sailing mechanics that was used (much better) in the sequel.

The fifth game overall in the franchise, but the first numbered sequel to follow the outstanding AC2, this was a very disappointing effort for me. It remains the only AC game that I have not come anywhere close to finishing and i'm not sure I will ever look to rectify that. The opening missions are painfully slow and boring, and when Connor does eventually turn up things improve but not by much. After about 20 hrs of play I had no great desire to continue so I could not recommend this to others.
